The two flagship civic tech programs that engineers imagined working at are both gone. What replaced them is, in some ways, more interesting.

DOGE officially expired on July 4, 2026 — on schedule, without a final report, without a transition plan. In the eighteen months before that expiration, the U.S. Digital Service — renamed "United States DOGE Service" in January 2025 — saw its staff fall from 230 to roughly 43, with a third of remaining employees resigning in protest. 18F was shut down in February 2025.
